Sehenswürdigkeiten der anderen Art II - Landmark of the different kind, Part II
Wie im vorigen Post angekündigt, hier noch ein paar Informationen zum Pendant des berühmten Friedhofes in Prazeres, dem Cemitério do Alto de São João, ebenfalls ein Handlungsort in sogar zwei meiner Bücher.
1925 wurde hier das erste Krematorium des Landes gebaut - und 1936 nach nur 22 Kremationen auf Betreiben der katholischen Gemeinde wieder geschlossen. 1985 öffnete es wieder - diesmal auf Betreiben der hinduistischen Gemeinde.
Über die Bedeutung der auf den beiden Friedhöfen bestatteten Persönlichkeiten lässt sich streiten. Auf dem Cemitério do Alto de São João hat man zumindest zwei Persönlichkeiten, die sich auch in bekannten Straßennamen wiederfinden: Miguel Bombarda und Cândido dos Reis (Av. de Almirante Reis).
As already announced in the previous post, here a few information about the "twin brother" of the famous cemetery of Prazeres, the Cemitério do Alto de São João, also a scene of even two of my books.
In 1925, the first crematorium of Portugal was built - and closed again after only 22 cremations under the pressure of the Catholic community. It re-opened in 1985, this time at the instigation of the Hinduist community.
One can argue about the importance of the people buried in the two cemeteries. In Cemitério do Alto de São João, at least two personalties can be found whose names also appear on the street map of Lisbon: Miguel Bombarda and Cândido dos Reis (Av. de Almirante Reis).
