About
The most exciting thing about being an author is the opportunity to re-invent yourself. Randolph Kroening is a pseudonym, which I created when setting out to write crime fiction novels, the plots of which are set in Lisbon, first as an experiment only, and actually only for myself. Finally, I was encouraged to eventually go all the way to publication by two people. On the one hand, there was/is my probably most critical reader, my wife, who would most certainly not have allowed me to waste time we could otherwise spend together on writing something for the trash can. On the other hand, there is a by no means less critical fellow writer in the vicinity of Munich.
Some years ago, I quit my job as a senior consultant with a big German management consulting firm and left Germany for good. I am presently living with my wife and our two cat (known by the names of James Tiberius Kirk and Leonard Horatio McCoy) in Portugal, in Caxias, with the Atlantic Ocean and the small Castelo de São Bruno de Caxias, built into the water, before my eyes. My way to my place of work in Lisbon takes me along the river Tejo, passing the Torre de Belém, the Mosteiro Jerónimos, passing underneath the Bridge of the 25. April, seeing the Cristo Rei Statue on the other side of the river. Then another train takes me on, passing the 'Aqueduto das Águas Livres', right into the business centre of Sete Rios. Writing is a hobby, and it will remain that way. To write means to spend a lot of time alone, and for that, I am enjoying to be amongst people too much. Well, of course also to observe them. Who knows, maybe I will meet the protagonist of my next story already tomorrow, on the bus, the train, at work ...
Over the past few years, Lisbon has increasingly been the setting for TV productions - especially crime movies. If you feel that one of my books (or all of them) could serve as the basis for a screenplay, please contact me.
